They aren&amp;#39;t necessary, but the beds are pretty rock-hard, so having some extra padding definitely wouldn&amp;#39;t hurt. If you are used to sleeping on the hard ground with a sleeping pad (not sure what kind you use and how cushy they are), it&amp;#39;ll be about the same experience, except without the narrowness.
